Backflow occurs when the normal flow of water is reversed. This reversal can happen due changes in the water pressure, such as a dramatic loss in pressure due to a broken water main or a broken fire hydrant.
California State Water Resource Control Board requires all water purveyors to insure backflow devices to be tested annually, Under Section 64764 of the regulations. The water supplier may provide this service with an additional fee or they may put the responsibility on the owner of the device.
Backflow Devices consist of of valves and mechanisms that allow water to flow in one direction. These mechanism can be subject to failure. Most backflow devices, depending on age, can be repaired if one of the mechanisms fail.
